My Personal Ethical Considerations:
I think we all have the ability to discern when someone is being authentic or conniving, even when we are in desperation, I have certainly been there myself. I am frequently checking in with myself to see what is in alignment with my ethical truth and what is not.
My intention with the use of affiliate links is to help fund the time I spend providing valuable information to the public at no extra cost to them. As someone with Chronic Complex Illness, learning to value myself and my time has been a big part of my healing journey. The way I keep it ethical is that you are free to look up the products I mention elsewhere and not use my affiliate links, I will always list the name of the product outside the link for this purpose.
How Affiliate Programs Work (I had no idea, until I started using them, and honestly didn’t really understand how retail worked either):
- A company either manufactures a product or buys it at wholesale cost, then they mark up that product to sell it, this is called MSRP (a common practice is to double the price but this is often not the case for higher priced items).
- So a company then makes 50% (or less) of the cost of a product as a profit.
- An affiliate program is where they essentially share some of their profit by giving someone a small percentage (usually between 1-9%) of the total sale price as compensation for recommending their products.
- This is usually a one time profit, unless someone goes through an affiliate link every time to purchase a product (if they buy it more than once), which is something I personally do when I really value someone and want to support their work.
- Fullscript and Wellevate are slightly different than affiliate links. I receive 20% of the markup cost from Wellevate and Fullscript on all orders you place through them. This still represents a discount to you of 15% from what you would pay for the same products as a retail customer. It is basically a program set up to make it easier for a practitioner to purchase products wholesale supplements and resell them without having to do the boxing and shipping. Which is why I could receive a total of 35% of the MSRP, but I choose to only take 20% and pass on a 15% savings to my customers, and the company receives the other 15% of the MSRP.
